Why We Decided to Enter the Injury Compensation Field in Bulgaria
For years, the compensation sector in Bulgaria has been dominated by so-called “agents” — individuals who are the first to witness or report an accident, typically police officers or ambulance staff. This practice has always operated at the very edge of legality.
In many cases, the police officer who arrives first at the scene of a car accident immediately contacts a pre-selected lawyer who then rushes to the accident site, the hospital, or even the victim’s relatives at home. Naturally, such urgency occurs only when the compensation amount is expected to be substantial. There is nothing wrong with high compensation — the problem lies in how it is distributed.
Since these compensations are paid by the Guarantee Fund, the risk of denial is practically nonexistent. In practice, the compensation is transferred to the lawyer’s bank account — which is not an issue by itself — but the injured party or their heirs are then pressured to sign documents that allocate the majority of the funds to the “injury lawyer,” leaving the actual victim with very little or, in some cases, almost nothing.
To put an end to these unfair practices, we believe that every road-accident victim in Bulgaria should have the right to appoint a lawyer who will not exploit their vulnerable situation but instead offer a fair and transparent arrangement.
What a fair arrangement means
A fair arrangement means:
No win, no fee, under a clear and transparent agreement between the injured party and the law firm; or
A pre-settlement, where the law firm pays the victim an upfront amount, and the firm later receives the court-awarded compensation.
